Virtue of Fasting in the Blessed Month of Ramadan

All Praise is due to Allah, we thank him, we seek His aid, we ask for His forgiveness and we repent to Him, and we seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our own souls and from the evil of our shortcomings. Whomsoever Allah the Almighty has guided none can lead astray and whosoever Allah the Almighty has misguided none can bring him back to the path, and I further bear witness that none has the right o be worshiped but Allah Alone, without a partner, and I further bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and His Messenger. May Allah the Almighty shower His Mercy and Blessings on him, his family members, his companions and whoever follows their footsteps till the Day of Judgment.

And to proceed:

These are sittings for the blessed month of Ramadan that contain many rules of fasting, the night prayers, almsgiving and some other suitable issues for this blessed month of Ramadan. I compiled these issues to address them in the day sessions or the night sessions. I have selected speeches of these sessions from the book:

"Pleasing the eyes of those who can see with the summarization of the book of insight" and I have adjusted what is needed to be adjusted from that book. I have mentioned in this book many rules and etiquettes relating to this blessed month because of the need of the people to these rules, and I named this book "sittings of the blessed month of Ramadan". This book was printed several times, then I later decided to comment on it in a summarized manner and then emanate its narrations, and to add what I think is needed to be added, and to delete whatever is unnecessary which are very few, I ask Allah the Almighty to make our deeds sincerely for Him Alone and make it beneficial for the people, verily He is the Most Generous the most bounteous.

The first session:

All praise is due to Allah the One who created the conies, He created water and soil. He originated everything and spread them about. The crawling of the black ant in the darkness of the night is not hidden from His sight. The smallest atom in the heaven or the earth is not hidden from His knowledge. To Him belong all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and all that is between them, and all that is under the soil. And if you speak aloud, then verily, He Allah knows the secret and that which is yet more hidden. He created Adam, tested him, chose him, accepted his repentance and guided him. He sent Noah who built the ark by the command of Allah and sailed, and He Saved Al-khalil and that is Abraham from the burning fire, and its heat turned cool and peaceful for him, therefore take a lesson from what happened. Then He gave Moses nine clear signs but Pharaoh still persisted in his arrogance and did not pay heed to the signs. And He strengthened Jesus with miracles that amazed the creatures. And He sent down the Book to Mohammad s.a.w. in it are clear signs and guidance. I thank Him for His bounties that reach us constantly, and I send peace and salutations to His Messenger Mohammad who was sent from the Mother of the cities {Mecca}, and to his companion Abu Bakr who was with him in the cave, and to Omar who has an inspiring opinion that was fortified by his Lord, and to Othman the husband of his two daughters, this is not a fabricated story, and to the son of his uncle, the ocean of knowledge and the brave lion, and to the rest of his companions whose virtue spread throughout the world, may the peace and blessings of Allah be on all of them.

O people! Verily we will soon be shaded by a blessed month and a tremendous season in which Allah the Almighty ennobles the reward, and gives generously, and opens the doors of good for those who desire good. It is the month of goodness and blessings. It is the month of scholarship and gifts. Allah the Most High states:

{شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِى أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَـاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ } [البقرة: 185]،

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the Criterion (between right and wrong).

It is a month that is surrounded with mercy and forgiveness and salvation from the Hell-Fire. Its beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness and its end is a salvation from the Hell-Fire. There are famous prophetic narrations on the virtues of Ramadan, and there are a lot of traces pertaining to the virtues of this month. It is reported in the two authentic books of Bukhari and Muslim from the narrations of Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – that the prophet s.a.w. said:

«إِذَا جَاءَ رمضانُ فُتِّحَت أبوابُ الجنَّةِ، وغُلِّقَتْ أبوابُ النار، وصُفِّدتِ الشَّياطينُ».

"When Ramadan arrives, the doors of the heavens are opened and the doors of the Hell-fire are closed and the devils are shackled" {collected by Al-Bukhari and Muslim}

The doors of Paradise will be opened only because of the multiplicity of the righteous deeds that are performed in that blessed month, likewise to urge the slaves to increase in their good deeds, and the doors of the Hell-fire will be closed because sins will be distanced away in that month from those who believe; the devils will be chained so that they will not have the opportunity to do what they used to do in other than the month of Ramadan.

Imam Ahmad narrated from Abu Huraira – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said:

"My Ummah has been given five qualities in Ramadan that were not given to the nations before them,: the bad breath from the one who fasts is with Allah, better than the fragrance of musk, the angels ask forgiveness for them until they break their fast, and Allah the Almighty beautifies His Paradise every day and says: my pious slaves are about to throw the burden and the harm off them and turn to you, and the devils will be chained so that they will not have the access to do what they used to do in other than the month of Ramadan, and their sins will be forgiven at every last hour of the night. It is said: O messenger of Allah do you mean the night of Power? He said: no but every laborer receives the fruit of his labor upon the completion of his work.

The first quality:

The bad breath that comes from the mouth of the one who fasts is with Allah like the fragrance of the musk – the word" khaluf with the vowel a or u" after the letter kha means the bad breath that generates from the mouth of the one who fasts due to the emptiness of his stomach from food. This smell is disliked by the people but with Allah it is like the smell of the musk, and this is because it comes from the obedience of Allah and His worship, and everything that occurs due to the worship of Allah and His obedience, Allah the Almighty replace it with what is better. Can't you see the martyr who is killed for the sake of Allah because he is fighting to make the word of Allah victorious, he will come on the Day of Judgment with blood flowing from his injuries, its color is red as the color of blood but its smell is like the smell of musk?

Likewise in hajj, Allah the Almighty vies the angels in glory with the people of Arafah: and he will say to his angels:

«انْظُرُوا إلى عبادِي هؤلاء جاؤوني شُعْثاً غُبْراً». رواه أحمد وابن حبَّان في صحيحه

"Look at these slaves of mine, they came to me shaggy matted and dusty"

Ahmad and Ibn Hibban narrated this hadith in their sahih. Being shaggy matted in this occasion is beloved to Allah because it happened due to the obediance of Allah and adhering to his commands by abstaining from the prohibitions of the Ihram and leaving the luxurious life.

The second quality:

The Angels ask forgiveness for them until they break their fast: the angels are honorable slaves of Allah, because they do not disobey Allah regarding what he has commanded them with and they do what they are commanded to do. Therefore they deserve the honor of their supplication being accepted by their Lord because He is the one who commanded them with that. Allah the Almighty ask them to seek forgiveness for those who fast from this Ummah in a way of honoring them, and proving their dignity and the virtue of their fasting. The word "istigfar" means seeking forgiveness, and that is concealment of sin in this world and overlooking them in the hereafter. This is one of the highest demands and ultimate goals, for verily every son of Adam is a sinner, they wrong themselves so as a result they are in constant need of the forgiveness of Allah the Almighty.

The third attribute:

Allah the Almighty beautifies His Jannah every day and he will say: "my righteous slaves will soon throw their burdens and the harm which they are experiencing and return to you"

So Allah the Almighty beautifies His Jannah every day to have it ready for his pious slaves and to urge them upon doing good deeds that will help them to acquire that Jannah; as He the Glorified states: "my pious slaves shall soon throw the burden and harm off them" meaning the burden of this worldly life and its hardships and will turn towards doing the righteous deeds in which is their happiness in this world and in the hereafter and reaching the home of peace and dignity.

The forth quality:

The rebellious devils will be tied down with chains and collars so they will not be able to reach the righteous slaves to misguide them from the truth or prevent them from doing good deeds. And this is from the support of Allah to His pious slaves through the detention of their enemy who invites his party to be from the dwellers of the hell-fire.

This is the reason why you find that many pious people increase in their deeds and try to stay away from doing evil in this blessed month of Ramadan more than any other month.

The fifth attribute:

Allah the Almighty forgives the Muslims on the last night of this month as long as they carry out what is upon them to do in this blessed month; including fasting, night-prayer and so on. He the Almighty out of His bounty will give them their reward in full at the completion of their deeds, because the laborer gets the compensation of his work after he completes it.

Allah the Glorified has bestowed on his slaves the virtue of obtaining this reward from three aspects:

The first aspect: He has legislated for them some righteous deeds that lead to their sins being forgiven and their ranks being raised. Had it not been because He Allah has legislated these acts of worship on them they wouldn’t have worshiped Allah with them. That is because worship can only be taken from the revelations of Allah revealed to His Messengers. That is why Allah the Almighty denounced those who legislate besides Him, and considered that as a form of associating partners with Him, as He the Most High stated:

{أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُواْ لَهُمْ مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ وَلَوْلاَ كَلِمَةُ الْفَصْلِ لَقُضِىَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَإِنَّ الظَّـلِمِينَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ } [الشورى: 21].

“Or have they partners (with Allâh – false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allâh has not ordained? And had it not been for a decisive Word (gone forth already), the matter would have been judged between them. And verily, for the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong doers) there is a painful torment”. Shoura: 21

The second aspect: He granted them the success to do the righteous deeds. For verily, many people have deserted them. Had it not been because of the help of Allah and His success they wouldn’t have carried them out. Therefore to Allah belongs all bounty and favor. Allah the almighty states:

{يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُواْ قُل لاَّ تَمُنُّواْ عَلَىَّ إِسْلَامَكُمْ بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَداكُمْ لِلاِْيمَـانِ إِنُ كُنتُمْ صَـادِقِينَ } [الحجرات: 17].

“They regard as favor to you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) that they have embraced Islâm. Say: "Count not your Islâm as a favour to me. Nay, but Allâh has conferred a favor upon you that He has guided you to the Faith if you indeed are true" alhujuraat: 17.

The third aspect: Out of His bounty He gives a multiple reward, every good deed will be multiplied by ten, to seven hundred and to more than that. Therefore the bounty and favor is from Allah and the reward is from Him as well. Therefore all praise belongs to Allah Lord of the worlds.

O my brothers! Reaching the month of Ramadan is indeed a great blessing from Allah upon whoever reached it, and gave it its right of turning towards Allah with repentance from your sins and being obedient to Allah, and from being negligent of Allah to remembering Him, and from being far away from Him to being closer to Him.

O he who committing sins did not suffice him in Rajab

Until he sin against his Lord in Sha'ban

The month of fasting has arrived after them

So do not turn it into a month of disobedience as well

Recite the Qur'an and glorify the praises of your lord

For verily it is the month of Qur'an and glorification

How many have you known who fasted with you in the past?

From among your family members, neighbors and brothers

Death has perished them and spared you after them

How close is the farness from the approaching one!

O Allah we ask you to awaken us from the recumbence of negligence and grant us success to increase in righteousness before passing away, and sustain us with taking advantage of our time at times of respite. And forgive us, and our parents and all the Muslims with your mercy, you are the Most Merciful. And may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Mohammed s.a.w, his families and companions in general.
